Abstract

When applying photoresist to printed circuit boards (PCB) the surface temperature of the PCB affects resist adhesion. A higher temperature at the resist/copper interface allows the resist to flow into the varying surface topography of the copper. This process improves resist adhesion and performance in the circuitize process by reducing opens and neckdowns. Circuit board processes employ heaters to raise PCB temperature.

      When applying photoresist to printed circuit boards (PCB) the
surface temperature of the PCB affects resist adhesion. A higher
temperature at the resist/copper interface allows the resist to flow
into the varying surface topography of the copper.  This process
improves resist adhesion and performance in the circuitize process by
reducing opens and neckdowns.  Circuit board processes employ heaters
to raise PCB temperature.

      PCB cleanliness prior to resist application is also important.
If contamination is present at the resist/copper interface an open
circuit will appear after the PCB is developed and etched.  Circuit
board processes employ PCB cleaners to eliminate this problem.

      In a typical process PCB's travel on a conveyor through the
various process steps (fig. 1).

      The disclosed concept (fig. 2) incorporates transport, heater
and High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter in a single,
enclosed unit (1).  Operation is as follows: Clean panel (2) arrives
from preceding process and is suspended and transported by air track
(3).  Air is circulated through the system by blower (4) and is
heated by heater (5) and cleaned by HEPA filter (6).  This concept
eliminates separate heater and cleaner, reduces thermal shock to PCB,
improves contamination control and transports PCB's with minimal
moving parts.
