Presentation Manager Interface for Errors Requiring User Interaction

Disclosed is an OS/2* application called the Operator
Intervention process, a means for which the OS/2 system application
can notify an operator that an error requiring their intervention has
occurred.

In the multiprocessing world of OS/2, most processes run in the
background (no screen/keyboard).  Whenever one of these processes
encounters an error which requires operator interaction, an inter-
process message must generated and sent to a foreground process in
order to notify and receive input from an operator.  The Operator
Intervention Presentation Manager* (PM) process was developed to
generically handle these cases.

When a error occurs in an OS/2 application requiring operator
intervention, the inter-process message is sent to one or more
Operator Intervention processes.  Since there may be numerous
operator stations in a typical system, an Operator Intervention
process may generally reside at each station.  The Operator
Intervention process itself will log each intervention that is
received from the various applications and display them to the
operator.  If the operator is currently utilizing the station, the
Operator Intervention process will immediately receive the focus and
foreground, thus notifying the operator of the intervention. The
operator can then decide to either claim (recognize) the
intervention, get more details on the intervention, clear the
