Self Fastening System for Structural, Decorative Cover Panel

       This article describes a design solution for retaining
plastic or other slightly-flexible panels without individual
fasteners or tools.

      The figure depicts opposite sides of a decorative panel which
has integral hook features and latch features on the non-decorative
side.  The hook features are all oriented in the same direction
(upward in this example) and engage windows in a host member or part
(not shown).  Latch features on the panel are located along optional
beam-like flex zones which provide additional localized flexure to
facilitate automatic latching action during panel installation.

      To install the decorative panel, its hook features are inserted
into matching windows in host part and the decorative panel is
pressed flat against the host part hard enough to deflect the flex
zones an amount equal to the the height of the latch features, then
the panel is slid parallel to the face of host member (in the
direction the hook features point) until the latch features engage
edges of the matching latch windows in the host member as the flex
zones return to their straight condition.

      For disassembly, the latch flex zones can be tool-deflected for
unlatching to allow reverse-sliding the hook features out of
engagement with the windows of the host part.  Flex zones could also
