Abstract

Disclosed is a simple system which may be used to extend the life of head/disk systems which are limited due to debris. It is a jet of clean air blown in close proximity to the head. It differs from furnishing a clean (macro-ambient) environment to the head disk system by circulating air through filters needed only by the jet. The jet breaks the debris collection cycle even if the debris is from the disk itself and hence not amenable to "cleaning" by macro-ambient cleaning. This design can work in systems where the debris is external to the head disk system, which, in effect, could reduce the need for costly "macroambient" designs and thus reduce overall costs.

The jet breaks the debris collection cycle even if the debris is from

cleaning.  This design can work in systems where the debris is
external to the head disk system, which, in effect, could reduce the

      Experiments have shown this method to be effective. This device
does not need high volume rates.  It needs to be designed to account
for accessing so as to account for the "skewed" air striking the
slider other than directly from the front.
