WIP Accounting in a Manufacturing Environment

Disclosed is a program titled WIP Accounting which
assists in monitoring WIP as the manufacturing process manipulates
the products. WIP Accounting is a background process responsible for
all quantity updates to the database.  WIP Accounting receives
transactions from data collection applications, then performs all
required updates to the status data.  (Refer to the figure.)  WIP
Accounting handles the following types of transactions
      1.  Claims
      2.  WIP on Hold
      3.  Scrap
      4.  Retract

The database continually accounts for the following information
      1.  Amount of WIP at a specific operation
      2.  Amount of WIP exiting an operation correlated by hour
      3.  Amount of WIP scrapped at an operation correlated by hour
      4.  Amount of WIP on hold at a specific operation.

In addition, WIP Accounting, provides data required by other
applications, facilitating "semi real time" status of the
manufacturing line.  WIP Accounting provides the data, as requested
by the application, upon the registration of the transaction.
Manufacturing status applications can specify the type of data to be
forwarded in the following combinations.
      1.  One Operation/All Products
      2.  One Operation/One Product
      3.  All Operations/One Product
      4.  All Operations/All Products

WIP Accounting also provides a shift change notification to
manufacturing status applications and pauses database activity
without impacting data collection applications to provide a window
for database maintenance.

The following section provides a technical description of the
software components comprising the WIP Accounting application.  The
WIP Accounting application has five main functions.

The WIP Accounting module receives a WIP transaction. WIP
Accounting interprets the extent of the transaction update (WIP
claimed, scrapped, placed on Hold, or retracted) then updates the
various database tables affected by the WIP transaction.
Resource registration

The WIP Accounting module registers resources requiring "semi
real time" WIP status updates.
Distribute updates to manufacturing status applications

The WIP Accounting module will send WIP information to
manufacturing status applications registered in order to keep
graphical status displays synchronized with the WIP updates.
Shift change notification

The WIP Accounting module actively monitors the elapsed time
for each shift.  This is accomplished thr...
