Stacking Cube Icons

       Provided is a technique for attaching icons to one
another while preserving individual operations in order to overcome
deficiencies with conventional techniques.

      Users are provided with conventional icon-based support.  In
addition, users are allowed to perform the following:
      -    Create a new entity (icon) of the desired type.
      -    Attach the new entity to another of the same or of a
distinct type via direct manipulation techniques.
      -    Each icon is visually maintained, and selection of each
icon is maintained.

      The attached icons can be selected as a group. Operations can
be performed on individual icons or upon the group.  The attached
icons can be separated.

      An end user will experience the following benefits:
      -    New functionality
      -    An improved model of icon behavior closer to the real
world
      -    Improved usability for certain tasks
      -    Reduced worksteps
