Abstract

Disclosed is method for integrating UNIX* software development tools under the AIX** X-Windows programming environment to achieve visual and control consistency without changing code in the tools. The method, referred to as the AIX X-Windows Tools Encapsulator (AXTE), uses a binary search algorithm on a sorted link list and provides consistency such that tools in the X-Windows environment have the same "look-and-feel" and can be accessed by pointing and clicking. AIX X-Window Tools Encapsulator

Disclosed is method for integrating UNIX* software
development tools under the AIX** X-Windows programming environment
to achieve visual and control consistency without changing code in
the tools.  The method, referred to as the AIX X-Windows Tools
Encapsulator (AXTE), uses a binary search algorithm on a sorted link
list and provides consistency such that tools in the X-Windows
environment have the same "look-and-feel" and can be accessed by
pointing and clicking.

On AIX or UNIX, most tools are accessed primarily by typing
text as inputs.  One way in which AIX tools can run under X-Windows
and take some advantage of X-Windows' pointing and clicking is by the
use of Aixterm, a terminal emulator.  However, Aixterm takes only a
minimum advantage of the X-Windows' system.  This method of this
article extends Aixterm's features without changing it by providing a
menu bar on the top of Aixterm.  Aixterm is placed as a sub-window
under the Motif Main Window widgets on which the menu bar is
displayed and several features are added including: pull-down menus
using Motifs widgets; ability to communicate between tools running on
Aixterm; and pop up Motif dialog for inputs and outputs, without
changing code in the tools.

The architecture of AXTE is shown in the figure.  Each solid
box indicates an independent process.  Aixterm is placed as a
