Abstract

Disclosed is a method for automatically deriving production rules that incrementally maintain user-defined materialized views. When changes are made to the base tables from which a view is derived, rules are triggered to automatically modify the view accordingly. This approach is very efficient when the maintenance rules are incremental, i.e., when they modify the view according to the changes made to the base tables, without considering the entire database state.

Deriving Production Rules for Incremental View Maintenance

Disclosed is a method for automatically deriving
production rules that incrementally maintain user-defined
materialized views.  When changes are made to the base tables from
which a view is derived, rules are triggered to automatically modify
the view accordingly.  This approach is very efficient when the
maintenance rules are incremental, i.e., when they modify the view
according to the changes made to the base tables, without considering
the entire database state.

The  user  specifies a view definition and key information for
the view's base tables.  The method performs syntactic analysis on
the view definition and, using the key information, generates a set
of production rules that correctly maintain the view.  Whenever
possible, the method generates incremental maintenance rules.
However, for some base table operations, the method may determine
that incremental maintenance is not possible; for these operations,
the method generates rules that perform automatic rematerialization.
