Abstract

A general-purpose, high-force, vacuum fixture (see the figure) for the printed circuit card fabrication industry is built on a low-profile aluminum jig plate or otherwise flat, stable, and lightweight base plate. A shallow vacuum plenum cavity is machined in the base plate from the top side of the plate with suitable high flow vacuum channels provided to direct air flow to a high volume vacuum source connection. A hard rubber, plastic, or machined vacuum plenum insert is a key element of the design providing a closely spaced raised grid of low profile, high flow, cylindrical supports over the entire surface area of the insert (plenum).

       A general-purpose, high-force, vacuum fixture (see the
figure) for the printed circuit card fabrication industry is built on
a low-profile aluminum jig plate or otherwise flat, stable, and
lightweight base plate.  A shallow vacuum plenum cavity is machined
in the base plate from the top side of the plate with suitable high
flow vacuum channels provided to direct air flow to a high volume
vacuum source connection.  A hard rubber, plastic, or machined vacuum
plenum insert is a key element of the design providing a closely
spaced raised grid of low profile, high flow, cylindrical supports
over the entire surface area of the insert (plenum).  The vacuum
plenum insert is designed flush to the top surface of the base plate
in order that a reliable seal is readily established between the
fixture base and a vacuum template used to customize the fixture to
differing products.  Thin, low-cost, reusable, replaceable, vacuum
templates incorporating customized vacuum transfer hole patterns for
differing products are placed on top of the base plate and vacuum
plenum insert.  Vacuum templates are rigidly supported on the
underside by the vacuum plenum insert and outer periphery of the base
plate.  A reliable, tight seal is readily established around the
periphery of the vacuum template in contact with the fixture base and
