Pre-Emptive Data Transmission

       Proposed is a method of reducing apparent transmission
delay in some video conferencing systems in multimedia communication
environments by anticipating the user's request and sending data over
spare communications bandwidth before specifically directed.

      A multi-media personal conferencing system includes a facility
to allow multiple users to view and update a shared drawing area.  On
low-bandwidth communication channels, the delay in transmitting the
information on such a facility is slow.  When during a call it is
necessary to send the contents of the facility to one or more
participants currently in the call, it can take an unacceptable
amount of time.  This proposal takes the opportunity to use spare
bandwidth earlier on in the call to pre-empt the request by sending
the data beforehand.  Three main problems need addressing:
Communication Scheduling, Data Integrity and Data Privacy.

      Communication Scheduling: This method is designed not to affect
any other communications process which may be going on
simultaneously.  Scheduling is addressed by setting up a separate
queue from the one used by the main communications process, and
designating it a low priority. Thus, data from this queue will be
sent only when both the communications buffer and the main queue are
empty.

      Data Integrity: If alterations are made between pre-emptive
