Abstract

The Realtime Interface Co-Processor Four-Port Selectable Interface Board/A was required to implement the equivalent of nine physical communications interfaces. In order to provide this function, a 100-pin connector was needed. The use of a given pin with more than one type of interface signal eliminated the need for a 100-pin connector and allowed the use of a lower cost 78-pin connector. Additional benefits to using this 78-pin connector were shorter development and manufacturing schedules and compatibility with the family of communications adapters without the loss of function.

Pin Sharing the Four Port Selectable Interface Board/A

The Realtime Interface Co-Processor Four-Port Selectable
Interface Board/A was required to implement the equivalent of nine
physical communications interfaces.  In order to provide this
function, a 100-pin connector was needed.  The use of a given pin
with more than one type of interface signal eliminated the need for a
100-pin connector and allowed the use of a lower cost 78-pin
connector. Additional benefits to using this 78-pin connector were
shorter development and manufacturing schedules and compatibility
with the family of communications adapters without the loss of
function.

The table below illustrates the actual pin-sharing scheme which
was used to implement the required function.
