Some level of terminal awareness is technically possible. An on-line book should, through programming, query the hardware/emulator and adapt its examples to match. This could be as simple as only showing sample screens in illustrations as they would display on the terminal in use while reading the on-line manual.

       Some level of terminal awareness is technically possible.
An on-line book should, through programming, query the
hardware/emulator and adapt its examples to match.  This could be as
simple as only showing sample screens in illustrations as they would
display on the terminal in use while reading the on-line manual.

      As a preamble to 'opening' the book, the user can be queried
(i.e., press the F1 key..) to determine what Keyboard is in use and
only display instructions appropriate to the user's view. The results
can be saved as default for the next book to be viewed.

      This results in increased usability.  The user only sees what
is pertinent to the task at hand instead of a lot of "if you are
using a type phraseology.

      It increases the accuracy.  Instead of relying on the user to
know the type of device, let the program determine the correct device
(such as standard vs. expanded keyboard).

      It also frees the publication writer to write better
documentation.  The writer knows that only pertinent information will
be displayed.  Therefore, the writer can write information specific
to unique devices without having to surround the information with
phrases like "If on this but not on that."

      Lastly, testing of the manual can now be done in a less
error-prone way.  Instead of relying on the test to determine the
devices in use, the publications system determines it and displays
