Abstract

A program is disclosed that detects OS/2* Local Area Network (LAN) Server critical conditions and generates Systems Network Architecture (SNA) formatted alerts. The alerts can be routed to a network management services control point providing it with problem notification. The OS/2 LAN Server is a program that allows a workstation to share its files, printers and serial devices with other workstations.

Generic Alerter Service

A program is disclosed that detects OS/2* Local Area
Network (LAN) Server critical conditions and generates Systems
Network Architecture (SNA) formatted alerts.  The alerts can be
routed to a network management services control point providing it
with problem notification.  The OS/2 LAN Server is a program that
allows a workstation to share its files, printers and serial devices
with other workstations.

The Generic Alerter Service utilizes existing local LAN alerts
as a basis for generating generic alerts.  It receives the local LAN
alerts in the form of messages received in its mailslot.  The Generic
Alerter Service creates a mailslot via the OS/2 LAN Server
DosMakeMailslot function.  (All of the functions described in the
following text are OS/2 LAN Server functions, unless otherwise
noted.)

The Generic Alerter Service uses the NetAlertStart function to
register for notification when "ADMIN" and "ERRORLOG" class of events
(alerts) occur.  When an alert occurs, the NetAlertRaise function
writes the alert message to the Generic Alerter Service mailslot by
calling the DosWriteMailslot function.  The DosReadMailslot function
reads the first alert message in the mailslot, and removes the
message.

The error code is obtained from a data structure returned by
the DosReadMailslot call and checked against a table containing only
error codes supported for generic alerts.  If the error code is not
listed in...
