Abstract

The Robot End Effector will handle four different disks. The disks can vary both in thickness and diameter. It is capable of picking up to 30 disks at the same time. In the packaging area where it was first used, its function was to sort disks from cassettes to shipping containers. When a shipping container bottom was filled with the sorted disks, the Robot End Effector would pick up a shipping container cover with a vacuum cup (which this particular tool was equipped with) to install the cover onto the full shipping container bottom.

Robot End Effector to Handle Various Disk Types

The Robot End Effector will handle four different disks.
The disks can vary both in thickness and diameter. It is capable of
picking up to 30 disks at the same time.  In the packaging area where
it was first used, its function was to sort disks from cassettes to
shipping containers.  When a shipping container bottom was filled
with the sorted disks, the Robot End Effector would pick up a
shipping container cover with a vacuum cup (which this particular
tool was equipped with) to install the cover onto the full shipping
container bottom.

The Robot End Effector has three main components in the design
of the tool: (1) the support beam, (2) the spacing comb, and (3) the
moving clamp.
(1) The main function of the support beam is to allow the tool to be
rigid and add to the precision that it gives to transferring disks.
The support beam also acts as a bearing surface for the clamp bar and
mounting surface for the spacing comb.
(2) The spacing comb ensures precise location of the disks in the X,
Y, and Z axes.  The spacing comb allows the disks to be uniformly
spaced for inserting into containers. It also allows for different
inside diameters of the various disks as well as the different
thicknesses of the disks. Another function that the spacing comb
delivers is the mating surface of the clamp bar to give a positive
clamp of the disks.
(3) The moving clamp bar is actuated by an air cylinder. When air is
