Abstract

Disclosed is a device which verifies that the correct "D" shell connector, male or female, is installed in its correct location on printed circuit board (PCB) assemblies. The similarity between the male (plug) 3 and female (socket) 2 "D" shell connectors creates the potential for incorrect assembly.

Connector Gender Sense

Disclosed is a device which verifies that the correct "D" shell
connector, male or female, is installed in its correct location on
printed circuit board (PCB) assemblies.  The similarity between the
male (plug) 3 and female (socket) 2 "D" shell connectors creates the
potential for incorrect assembly.

Attached to the top plate 4 are two sense plates 5 & 6 that
are free to move vertically as they are lowered down on connectors 2
& 3.  The gauge opening on female sense plate 5 allows a female
connector 2 in the female position on PCB 1 to enter, but does not
allow a male connector 3 to enter. As female connector 2 enters the
gauge opening on female sense plate 5, it causes a change of state in
switch 7 which verifies a correct assembly.  The male connector 3 in
the male position on PCB 1 cannot enter the gauge opening on male
sense plate 6, causing the male sense plate to move higher and
produce a change of state in switch 8 which verifies a correct
assembly.

A male connector 3 installed in the female position on PCB 1
cannot change the state of switch 7, nor can a female connector 2
installed in the male position change the state of switch 8.
