Secondary Pole Tip Sharing

      The invention disclosed is a thin film inductive head with two
shaping layers.  The outer, or secondary layer improves head
saturation characteristics and writeability.  In addition, it shields
the disk from undesireable fields generated at high drive currents.

      Prior art utilizes only one, primary shaping layer. Applying a
second, thinner layer to either or both of the "P1" and "P2" poles
allows the head to align more closely to the air bearing surface.
This results in increased flux density and a corresponding increase
in the gap fringe field.  Performance is thereby improved.

      The additional layer consists of a permalloy or other magnetic
material with a thickness on the order of 0.2 to 0.4 micrometers.
