Abstract

Today, AS/400* customers must have an operator with their AS/400 systems so that the system control panel can be monitored. The system control panel must be read when certain classes of unrecoverable errors occur, such as direct access storage device (DASD) failures, main processor errors or other errors that will prevent the operating system from being loaded or executing. The system control panel needs to be operated in order to read all of the digits of the system reference code (SRC) displayed when one of these errors occur. It also needs to be operated and monitored when installing new versions of the system software.

Remote Operation of Control Panel for a Data Processing System

Today, AS/400* customers must have an operator with their
AS/400 systems so that the system control panel can be monitored.
The system control panel must be read when certain classes of
unrecoverable errors occur, such as direct access storage device
(DASD) failures, main processor errors or other errors that will
prevent the operating system from being loaded or executing.  The
system control panel needs to be operated in order to read all of the
digits of the system reference code (SRC) displayed when one of these
errors occur.  It also needs to be operated and monitored when
installing new versions of the system software.

This is a problem for customers with multiple systems, since
they prefer to manage their systems from a remote central location
where skilled system operators can manage several systems.

The remote operation of the system control panel will provide a
means for an operator to perform control panel functions from the
remote location.

Remote operation of the AS/400 control panel will be
accomplished by attaching a personal computer (PC) to the
manufacturing interface of the AS/400.  This personal computer gives
an operator control of the control panel from a local personal
computer (see Fig. 1).

Through the use of modems and software packages, it is possible
to control this locally attached PC from a remote location (see Fig.
2).

The local configuration consists of the following:
   Hardware
     o  AS/400 (9402, 9404 or 9406)
     o  Personal computer
     o  Manufacturing interface cable
   Software
     o  Control panel operation software

The control panel operation software consists of panel control
commands and procedure control commands.

The panel control commands consist of commands which give the
operator the ability to change IPL modes, start IPLs, read the panel
display and to compare the panel display with a specific value.

The procedure control commands are used to control the flow of
the panel control commands.

The control panel operation software may be run in two
different modes.  The first mode is an interactive mode in which the
operator issues a co...
