Abstract

The AS/400* PERFORMANCE INVESTIGATOR combines AS/400 real-time performance data collection with a PS/2*-based graphical view of that data. Data is collected from the AS/400 approximately every 15 seconds and sent to the PS/2 for threshold analysis and display. This tool provides the user with immediate feedback on the performance of their system, highlighting problem areas when thresholds are exceeded.

User Interface for PERFORMANCE Monitor

       The AS/400* PERFORMANCE INVESTIGATOR combines AS/400
real-time performance data collection with a PS/2*-based graphical
view of that data.  Data is collected from the AS/400 approximately
every 15 seconds and sent to the PS/2 for threshold analysis and
display. This tool provides the user with immediate feedback on the
performance of their system, highlighting problem areas when
thresholds are exceeded.

      Using Microsoft Windows 3.0**, INVESTIGATOR allows a user to
monitor up to 16 AS/400 systems on a PS/2 display, viewing data such
as CPU and direct access storage device (DASD) utilization, response
time, and communications utilization.  The key features of the
INVESTIGATOR are:
1. Collection of 8 types of data:
     o  CPU Utilization
     o  Response Time
     o  COMM IOPs
     o  Comm Lines
     o  LANs
     o  Disk IOPs
     o  Disk Arms
     o  Storage Pools
2. The user can configure the INVESTIGATOR to his/her own
specifications for threshold monitoring and data refresh.
3. The user can define thresholds to the INVESTIGATOR for each type
of data or use a provided default.
4. The user can define an interval length of between 15 seconds and 5
minutes (how often will the data be refreshed).
5. Three levels of information are available for each type of data.
6. The user receives real-time notification when thresholds are
exceeded.
7. All views can be reduced to icons on the screen.

      The INVESTIGATOR uses multiple document interface (MDI) to
display three levels of data for each resource on the AS/400.  For
each level of data there is a different type of MDI child window.
