Distributed Document Storage Management

Disclosed is a method by which documents may be stored on
one of several processors connected on a Local Area Network (LAN).

Distributed Storage Management is used to manage the content,
for example, Mixed Object Document Content Architecture (MODCA) of a
document.  The document (content) is stored on DASD and/or optical
storage (direct or LAN attach) of a given processor.  Residing on
each processor is a Storage Manager.  The Storage Manager maintains a
database which tracks all documents (content) known to it, including
the storage medium on which the document is currently located
(DASD/Optical or both).

The number of "storage" processors varies based on customer
needs.  At least one processor also contains an Index Manager.  The
Index Manager contains all of the indexing information associated
with a document (creation date, user defined fields, etc.), as well
as the name of the Storage Manager where the associated document
content is located. By definition, the processor on which an Index
Manager resides also contains a Storage Manager.

Document level requests are received by the Index Manager.
Communication with the designated Storage Manager (association
maintained in the Index Manager's database) is performed via LU 6.2
APPC across the LAN.

In addition to storing document content on DASD and direct
attached optical storage, a given Storage Manager may store documents
