Visual Two Level Information Categorization

A method for adding a second level of information
categorization to a computerized notebook, which typically only
allows one level of information categorization, is disclosed.  A user
can have each major section, denoted by a major tab, further divided
into subsections, each denoted by a minor tab.

In graphical windowing environments, a notebook control is
traditionally used to present only a single-level hierarchy of
information.  For example, a notebook can be used to divide an
address book into the names beginning with a specific letter.  In
many cases, one more level of information categorization is needed.
For example, in a calendar, the first level of categorization is the
year.  Within each year, we need one more level of categorization,
the month.

The solution extends the notebook control to enable category
grouping by major tabs, and, within each major tab's section, further
grouping by minor tabs (see Fig. 1).  For example, the major tabs in
the notebook could be the category of animal shown, while the minor
tabs for each category could be the particular animals in that
category.  This will allow a user to refine their interaction with
the notebook, thus finding information more quickly and easily.  For
example, if a user wanted to see a particular land animal, they can
simply select Land as the major tab for the animal category, and be
presented with the particular animals in tha...
