Abstract

Disclosed is a technique to implement action-object direct manipulation. With this approach, users select the action they want to perform by picking up the appropriate action icon (e.g. printer or shredder) and dragging it to the desired object. For multiple selection, the user picks up the action icon and drags it over the desired objects. As the icon passes over the objects, the user presses a predefined key (e.g. mouse button 1) to select them. Dropping the icon on the final object causes the action to be performed on all of the selected objects.
