Technique to Reduce Force in Air Cylinders

      Disclosed is a technique to reduce the force from an air
cylinder after the air pressure is applied to overcome the cylinder
stiction.

      In Figure 1, air cylinder A is shown together with solenoid C
and oil reservoir E.  House air B enters air cylinder A through
solenoid C and forces piston F to move.  House air pressure is set to
such a value to overcome the sticktion which exists between piston
and cylinder wall.  When the stiction is overcome, oil on the
backside of the piston exits through orifice D into oil reservoir E.
The small orifice diameter coupled with the viscous oil effectively
reduces the piston forces which are greater due to the increased air
pressure to overcome the stiction.
