OD Bias Arm/ Ramp

Disclosed is an invention comprising an outer diameter (OD)
bias arm and OD bias ramp for use in head disk assemblies (HDA's) to
prevent head crashes from occurring during power outages.

The carrier/head assembly is attached to the vertical portion
of an L-shaped supporting means.  The supporting means rests on a
track and is capable of rolling towards or away from the the data
tracks along this track.

The base of the L-shaped supporting means slopes downward to
form the OD bias ramp.  The OD bias arm is suspended horizontally
over the ramp during normal operation.

In the event of a power failure, the bias arm rotates downward
and makes contact with the upper portion of the bias ramp.  The
pressure supplied by the rotation pushes the support means, causing
it to roll away from the data tracks and thus avoiding a head crash.
