Disclosed are techniques for reducing the amount of network bandwidth required for streaming video and audio applications. This technology automatically detects situations when the streaming audio or video applications can be briefly halted to conserve bandwidth. The technology also automatically detects when the applications need to be resumed.

Method for Reducing Bandwidth of Streaming Audio and Video Applications

Disclosed are techniques for reducing the amount of network bandwidth required for streaming video and audio applications. Content providers use streaming audio and video to send content to users over the Internet. For example, a video-on-demand company might send a movie to a user's television, or an Internet radio company might stream music to a person listening on their computer. Streaming content can also be used for video conferencing and other uses. These applications consume a great deal of bandwidth, and this bandwidth is very costly.

Companies like Microsoft and RealNetworks have identified streaming media as a major area of growth. With this growth, the network will doubtlessly become even more congested unless content providers are willing to buy more equipment and bandwidth. Known methods of reducing bandwidth include compression and caching. These techniques are great, but the bandwidth can be reduced even further. When you listen to Internet radio on a computer, you might mute the music to answer the phone or some other purpose. Sometimes, you might forget to un-mute for several hours. Similarly, when watching a streaming video, you might leave the room for some time. During this time, the content continues to stream, consuming the precious bandwidth of the content provider.
