Background

Currently, when planning for catastrophes, businesses select a method for keeping some or all of their backup data offsite.  Normally this consists of backing data up to magnetic tapes, and storing the tapes at an offsite facility.  

General Description

The disclosed method enables the client to quickly back up data into a caching device, and then to transmit the data over a network (e.g. the Internet or a company Intranet) to an offsite facility (see Figure 1). The data may be left on the caching device to restore information to the clients quickly, but because it has been copied to the offsite location, the business is protected against a site catastrophe.

Advantages

The following are advantages of the disclosed method:

§         Allows the use of a fast internal network (e.g. 100 to 1000 mega bits per second) for backing up clients

§         Gives a backup administrator the ability to transfer data over the Internet/Intranet during low use periods

§         Keeps the most recent backup in the cache for quick restoration of data to failed clients, without having to retrieve offsite data
