Method for network file system boot

Disclosed is a method for network file system boot. Benefits include improved functionality and improved process simplification.

Description

The disclosed method enables a computer to be booted directly from a network file system.  The term network file system shall include file transfer systems that use a client/server or distributed model as well as centralized and distributed network file systems.

The method is enabled by a motherboard-based network interface or a network interface card (NIC) with embedded firmware (see Figure 1).

Before boot-up, the firmware obtains authentication information stored in nonvolatile memory. Alternatively, the user is queried for the authentication information, such as a username, password, and domain. As another option, the authentication information could be provided by an administrator via the network.

For file authentication and downloading from a server, the firmware contains client software for the supported network file systems. The firmware authenticates the user with the network file system’s security scheme. After successful authentication, the firmware running the preboot environment downloads the files required to boot the operating system from the network file system.

The network file system used for the boot process in the disclosed method is the same as the network file system used for general purpose file transfers. As a result, the disclosed...
