Event Based Asynchronous Accounting Mechanism in a Multitasking Environment

       This invention provides a mechanism for producing and
collecting accounting data such that accounting data can be processed
asynchronously in real time with the full capabilities of a
programming interface.

      These capabilities are provided by using the Event Services API
of STEVR/VM (Server Tasking Environment/VM) to define an "ACCOUNT"
system event.  The application uses the Account Services API to
determine what data is produced, how that data is accumulated, and
when that data is made available to the application.  The application
then may use the full power of the Event Services API to determine
what data is collected and how it is processed.

      An application may set the types of accounting records it is
interested in by using the AccountControl API.  The application may
also specify a time interval that tells the accounting routines when
to cut a new record, and/or choose to dynamically create a record,
regardless of the time interval that is in effect.  An application
may determine how the accounting data is accumulated by using the
AccountIdentify API to establish "account ids".  Each unit of
accounting data is associated with an account id and all data
associated with the same account id is accumulated together.

      The current account settings may be queried at any time, and
the application may dynamically change the settings at any time.
