Algorithm for Collecting, Storing and Recalling Printer Usage Metrics

       A means is disclosed for collecting, storing, and
recalling metrics relating to printer usage.

      In a known printer, it is useful to collect, store, and recall
usage metrics.  As defined here, usage metrics include the counting,
or metering, of various objects relating to the printer's usage.
These metrics are obtained as the printer is operating and are stored
in non-volatile memory so that metrics over the entire life of the
printer can be maintained.  The current values of the usage metrics
can be printed on demand.

      Included in the microcode of a known printer is the following
algorithm for usage metering:

      Objects which are metered include:
      -  power-on hours
      -  power-on cycles
      -  number of characters printed for each supported print
quality
      -  number of bar codes printed
      -  number of pages which contain graphics

      These objects are tracked while the printer is powered on and
are updated in non-volatile storage along with other printer
parameters.

      Metering of power-on hours is accomplished using a timer in the
printer.  When this timer reaches 1 hour, the number of power-on
hours is incremented.  The number of power-on cycles is incremented
each time a power-on reset sequence is completed successfully.  The
