Rules Based EMC Design Verification of Printed Circuit Boards

      Disclosed is a methodology for verifying the inclusion of
electromagnetic emissions control measures in the design and physical
layout of printed circuit boards (PCBs).  Conformance with
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) design rules is verified using
computer algorithms which operate on information extracted from the
PCB design.

      The rules-based EMC design verification methodology stems from
the need to quickly assess the level of implementation of emissions
control measures in PCB designs before entering the production phase.
The methodology is illustrated in the attached figure.  Computer code
has been developed which implements this methodology on designs
created in CBDS (Trademark of Northern Telecom Limited).

      The basic elements of rules-based EMC design verification are:
           .    EMC rules data base
           .    PCB design data base
           .    PCB design data extraction algorithms
           .   EMC critical component and signal selection facility
           .    EMC rules verification algorithms

      The EMC design verification proceeds as follows: Pertinent
physical and logical interconnect information is extracted from the
