Abstract

This article describes a technique for printing (on a workstation printer) a file whose name currently resides on an emulator window being viewed. Current workstation printer applications require the user to perform several operations to print the file. For example: 1. Open the printer icon. 2. Copy the file name from the emulator window to the clipboard. 3. Paste the file name into the printer application window. 4. Select the print button.

Dragging Emulator Data to a Printer Icon to Print a File

This article describes a technique for printing (on a
workstation printer) a file whose name currently resides on an
emulator window being viewed.  Current workstation printer
applications require the user to perform several operations to print
the file.  For example:
  1.  Open the printer icon.
  2.  Copy the file name from the emulator window to the
      clipboard.
  3.  Paste the file name into the printer application window.
  4.  Select the print button.

The user needs a one-step method to perform this frequently
requested operation in a simple and direct manner.

The workstation printer application needs to be changed so its
icon can accept a file identifier from a drag operation originating
from an emulator window (e.g., an OfficeVision*/VM note, a VM
FILELIST window, etc.).  It must perform the following functions:
-    When the user presses mouse button 2 while the mouse pointer is
over a file name in an emulator window, a program that provides
programmable mouse support (e.g., CMMOUSE) calls a drag program and
passes it the file name that was under the mouse pointer when button
2 was pressed.
-    When the marked file name from the emulator window is dragged
over the printer icon, the printer application must indicate to the
user that the data can be dropped. For example, the mouse pointer
could be changed to give this indication.
-    When the user...
