Abstract

This article describes a mechanism for a trade-off evaluation of a product in terms of manufacturing cost. A product with design alternatives is represented by an AND/OR lattice. A node in the AND/OR lattice represents the status of the product during a manufacturing process such as subassembly or work in process. An AND arc represents a manufacturing process and indicates that a parent node consists of all its child nodes. An OR arc indicates that a parent node is one of the child nodes representing design alternatives.

       This article describes a mechanism for a trade-off
evaluation of a product in terms of manufacturing cost.  A product
with design alternatives is represented by an AND/OR lattice.  A node
in the AND/OR lattice represents the status of the product during a
manufacturing process such as subassembly or work in process.  An AND
arc represents a manufacturing process and indicates that a parent
node consists of all its child nodes.  An OR arc indicates that a
parent node is one of the child nodes representing design
alternatives.

      Each node has a label.  Each label is a list of a form such
as ({A,B,C}, figure) consisting of a list of assumptions and a figure
indicating the manufacturing cost.  An assumption is a symbol and
represents a primitive design alternative.  Each leaf node contains
an assumption.

      First, leaf nodes are evaluated in terms of the cost of
materials.  Then, the label of the parent nodes of the leaf nodes are
derived according to their child nodes and an AND arc, which
represents a manufacturing process.  Then, parent nodes of those
parent nodes are repeatedly evaluated until the root node, which is
the final product, is evaluated.

      The manufacturing cost of a parent node is the sum of the
manufacturing costs of the child nodes and the cost calculated by an
AND arc.  Lists of the assumptions of child nodes are propagated to
their parent nodes.  The par...
