Abstract

Disclosed is a system for pointer controlling. The Palm Rest Pointer is mounted on a palm rest of the keyboard. This system controls a pointer on a computer display by sensing the pressure of the user's palm. It provides users with means for controlling the pointer without releasing their fingers from home row keys, and a good combination of pointing and typing.

Palm Rest Pointer

Disclosed is a system for pointer controlling.  The Palm
Rest Pointer is mounted on a palm rest of the keyboard.  This system
controls a pointer on a computer display by sensing the pressure of
the user's palm. It provides users with means for controlling the
pointer without releasing their fingers from home row keys, and a
good combination of pointing and typing.

The figure shows the example of this system.  Four sensors (for
example, strain gauges) are provided on the front and rear, right and
left of a palm rest.  Each sensor senses the force of the palm and
controls the orientation and speed of the pointer.  The pointer moves
horizontally when the palms press the right or left sensor, and it
moves vertically when palms press front or rear one.

This system detects the pressure of the palms, and any type of
sensor can be used.  Also, this system can be used for controlling a
pointer without a keyboard, such as in an air traffic control system.
