Foam Coated Support Plant for Backside SMT Printing

      The foam-coated print support plate is a universal fixture
which reduces setup time and eliminates costly tooling for printing
solder paste on the backside of surface mount printed circuit boards.

      In the surface mount panel assembly process, printing machines
are used to apply solder paste to the component pads on the raw
panel.  The printers utilize a squeegee to extrude paste through a
stencil onto the panel.  During the print process, the panel must be
supported in order to hold the panel firmly under the squeegee
pressure.  Most printers use a metal plate for panel support.
Surface mount technology has progressed so that components are now
attached to both sides of the panel.  This process involves printing
paste on one side of the panel, attaching the components, and then
printing on the other side.  For printing the second or backside of a
panel, the printer must have a fixture that will support the panel
without damaging the components that are on the first or front side
of the panel.  Printers utilize either a series of support pins under
the panel strategically placed between components, or a support plate
that is machined with reliefs for the components.

      This disclosure offers an alternative support fixture for
printing the second side of dual-side SMT panels.  A standard support
plate is coated with a 1/8" layer of 10 durometer antistatic foam.
