Abstract

Disclosed is a divided lower-yoke voice coil motor (VCM) for a low profile small hard disk drive (such as 2.5" size) for easy manufacturing and high airtight characteristics. In the divided-lower yoke VCM, a lower yoke is divided into two pieces, one of which is attached to a VCM assembly and the other of which is directly attached to a base plate of a disk drive and has screw holes to fasten the VCM assembly. This configuration is shown in Fig. 1.

Divided Lower Yoke Voice Coil Motor

       Disclosed is a divided lower-yoke voice coil motor (VCM)
for a low profile small hard disk drive (such as 2.5" size) for easy
manufacturing and high airtight characteristics.  In the
divided-lower yoke VCM, a lower yoke is divided into two pieces, one
of which is attached to a VCM assembly and the other of which is
directly attached to a base plate of a disk drive and has screw holes
to fasten the VCM assembly.  This configuration is shown in Fig. 1.

      In general, the surface of the base on which a VCM is assembled
is lower than any other base surface in a low profile small hard disk
drive.  Assembling the lower yoke piece into the base at the
beginning in order to fill up the lowest surface with the lower yoke
piece is able to get rid of hollow place where VCM is assembled.  So
this design can assemble the VCM to the base from the side.  VCM
side-way assembling has an advantage to make an automation
manufacturing line.  This configuration is shown in Fig. 2.

      On the other hand, this design extends design flexibility of
the base, cover and seal.  For example, sealing surface does not have
any slopes and steps as shown in Fig. 3 which is designed for prior
art VCM side-way assembling.  The divided lower-yoke (two pieces of a
lower yoke) leads to high airtight and good leak-test yield in
comparison with the prior art design as shown in Fig. 3, and the base
