Power Control Service Mechanism for Personal Computers

       Described is a hardware power control mechanism for
personal computers (PCs) to enable service personnel to operate a
system while the top cover is removed while maintaining the required
security features.

      The power control service mechanism is designed to enable
service personnel to operate a system unit with the top cover removed
and with security features intact.  A lever arrangement is captured
in card guide angular support walls positioned at the bottom of the
system unit.  Two unique ribs molded into the lever conforms with the
micro-switch levers mounted on the card guide.  It is possible to
place the lever in the lowest position in the system so as to render
the system non-operational with the cover removed.  Service personnel
insert and push the lever forward and upward to the top-most position
while servicing the system.  As the lever moves forward and upward on
the card guides' angular support walls, molded ribs deflect and
contact two micro-switch levers.  A signal is sent to override tamper
evident security features installed in the PC.

      Fig. 1 is an isometric view of a PC front cover equipped with
the service mechanism.  Lever 10 is shown at the bottom of the cover
in the non-operational mode.  Fig. 2 is an isometric view of the
service mechanism with the base and cover removed.  Card guide 11 is
designed to receive lever 10 when the lever mechanism is inserted.
