Zero Pitch Burnish Head

       A burnish head for thin film magnetic recording disks is
made with four small bearing feet which have the sharpest possible
shearing edge at the disk surface.  The front faces of the feet are
lapped, and the design is self sharpening.  The suspension used is an
in-line design.

      The burnish head is mounted on an in-line suspension so that
the drag forces are in the stiffest direction of the flexure.  The
gram load can be varied from 5 grams to 30 grams depending on the
texture of the disk.  Burnishing should be done with a head on each
side of the disk to avoid disk deflection and the resulting curvature
at the head.  The head has a 300 micron wide by 50 micron long
rectangular foot at each of its four corners.  Longer life can be
attained with larger feet, but ultimately the drag force becomes
excessive (on a smooth disk).  The front face of the feet is lapped
so that as the feet wear shorter a sharp cutting edge is maintained
at the leading edge of each foot.  This is done by machining the feet
and then bonding them to the slider body.  Thus, the feet can be a
different material than the slider.  A piezoelectric sensor may also
be bonded to the slider to sense asperities that are not burnishable.
The wear rate of the feet should be fast enough to stay ahead of the
edge-dulling processes due to asperities, but slow enough to provide
