Method for Distributing Audio Video in a Multimedia Network

       This article discloses a method to enable users on a
network to share multimedia information, such as audio and video.  In
particular, it describes the hardware required to implement a
multimedia network.

      The diagram illustrates a network consisting of the Basic
Access Switch (BAS) and attached multimedia workstations.
      Basic Access Switch
      * V       The video X-bar switch makes line level audio/video
connections based on configurations provided by the controller (B).
      * I1-In   Input ports to the video X-bar switch.
      * O1-On   Output ports from the video cross bar switch.
      * B       Intelligent processor controls the video X-bar switch
based on commands received via a LAN connection.
      * D1-Dn   Demodulators transform BAS receive frequency (f2) to
line level.
      * M1-Mn   Modulators transform line level to BAS transmit
frequency (f1).
      * C1-Cn   Couplers used to separate A/V from LAN signal.
