Dual Function Status Indicator

      Disclosed is a hardware implementation for indicating both
power-on status and disk activity status in a computer system.  A
dual-color light-emitting diode (LED) is used as the indicator.

      In certain prior-art computer systems, a power-on LED indicator
is provided but no disk activity indicator is provided.  It is
desirable to provide a disk activity indicator.

      The figure shows a block schematic diagram comprised of two
inputs, two tri-state buffers, a resistor, and a dual-color LED.  The
two inputs are +HARD_FILE and -POWER_GOOD.  The green LED segment is
active when power is good and there is no disk activity.  The amber
segment is active when power is good and there is disk activity.  The
green and amber segments are not active simultaneously.  The absence
of good power will result in no LED segments being activated.  A
prior-art computer system, enhanced with the dual-function status
indicator, does not require a change to its bezel and mechanical
packaging.
