Disclosed is an actuator arm for direct access storage devices (DASD's) mounted with a Piezo electronic transducer (PZT) for disk asperity detection and mapping. The arm-mounted configuration provides cost savings over conventional head-mounted crystals, and allows the use of any type of head in testing. PZT Crystal Mounted on Flexible Arm for Disk Asperity Detection

      Disclosed is an actuator arm for direct access storage devices
(DASD's) mounted with a Piezo electronic transducer (PZT) for disk
asperity detection and mapping.  The arm-mounted configuration
provides cost savings over conventional head-mounted crystals, and
allows the use of any type of head in testing.  In addition, PZT
crystals have a well-established history of favorable sensitivity,
frequency response, and electrical behavior.
DESCRIPTION

      A PZT crystal is bonded to a thin layer of glass insulation.
The glass is glued to the tip crossbar of an aluminum frame-type arm,
on the side opposite to the mounting of the head suspension system.

      Refinements include the insertion of damping material into the
rails of the arm to reduce post-impact arm ringing, and attachment of
a mass to the free surface of the crystal to increase signal
strength.

      The use of a light, flexible aluminum arm increases the
response to head vibrations transmitted through the suspension,
producing a larger PZT signal with sub-proportional increase in
background noise.
