Substrate Providing Simultaneous Optical/Electrical Interconnects for High Performance Packaging

      Disclosed is a class of new transmission lines which can
transmit simultaneously optical and electrical signals independently
of each other.

      These lines consist of an insulating, linear or non-linear
optical waveguide material that is enclosed by an electrical
conductor (organic or metallic) which has the ability to act as
optical cladding material.  These conductor lines can be part of
electrical and optical circuits simultaneously.  In case of certain
non-linear optical guides the electrically conducting cladding can be
used to change the reflective index of the optical material and thus
allow integrated optical signal modulation and/or optical signal
distribution.  To move three dimensionally the angle subtended by the
interconnection lines have to fulfill the condition of total internal
reflection.  Within these limits lateral and vertical interconnects
are possible.

      Such simultaneously optical/electrical interconnects can be
manufactured using fabrication sequences as shown in Fig. 1.
