Pizza Icon - Example of a Faxable Service Icon

       This article describes service-oriented icons that
represent objects to be ordered via phone or fax machines.  To
illustrate the concept, a Pizza icon is described.

      Online office systems may show icons that represent documents
or forms and may show a phone icon for dialing and an address book
icon for looking up telephone numbers, but there is little
interaction between the icons.  If a user saves his favorite pizza
description as a document, he can look it up, then use the address
book icon to find the phone number of the pizza restaurant, then use
the phone icon to dial the number.  A service-oriented icon (such as
a Pizza icon), reduces the number of steps by allowing the user to
just drag the icon to a phone or fax icon, sending the ordering
information to the supplier.

      In this example, the icon is a pizza, resulting in a food order
being faxed to a carry-out pizza restaurant.  However, the concept
could be applied to any service/delivery system where an online form
could be faxed to a receiving supplier.

      Among the user's computer desktop icons is a Pizza icon.  The
Pizza icon behaves as other icons: it can be moved, copied, printed,
discarded, renamed, etc.  It also has properties.  Properties for the
Pizza icon might include the icon name, supplier information (name,
phone number, fax number), and order information (size, crust type,
toppings, etc.).
