Disclosed is a design that promotes the grouping of keywords used in SQL statements to allow the user to create these statement easier and faster than traditional methods. With more and more user interfaces moving away from the keyboard and towards the use of mouse, pen-based, and touch-screen interfaces, typing in keywords, especially for commands like SQL statements, is an unnecessary, time-consuming task.

Intuitive Button Selection for SQL Statements

       Disclosed is a design that promotes the grouping of
keywords used in SQL statements to allow the user to create these
statement easier and faster than traditional methods.  With more and
more user interfaces moving away from the keyboard and towards the
use of mouse, pen-based, and touch-screen interfaces, typing in
keywords, especially for commands like SQL statements, is an
unnecessary, time-consuming task.

      Looking at one of the more complex SQL statements, the SELECT
statement, one must conclude that there will always be some typing
involved to create this statement.  The goal of any interface would
be to minimize input from the keyboard and allow the user to input
values only when necessary, such as when typing in a comparison
string.  Keywords, however, are a constant part of these statements
and can be separated into a static input group.

      This button group could be rectangular in shape and be further
subdivided into smaller rectangles, with each rectangle representing
a button for a particular keyword, such as NOT or >.  Instead of
typing in the keyword, the user can use the mouse button to select it
or touch the screen with a finger or pen in the appropriate area.
The application could then take the value of the touched button (the
string of the selected word) and append it after the cursor in a text
window that is used as the SQL statement construction area.
