Abstract

The disclosed implementation provides a user-interface procedure that safeguards critical interface operations from being accidentally activated. The operations are safeguarded by a nontrivial activation procedure to ensure that it is not invoked accidentally. On the other hand, we still make the procedure simple enough so that its user interface is intuitive.

Safeguard Mechanism in Graphic User Interface

      The disclosed implementation provides a user-interface
procedure that safeguards critical interface operations from being
accidentally activated.  The operations are safeguarded by a
nontrivial activation procedure to ensure that it is not invoked
accidentally. On the other hand, we still make the procedure simple
enough so that its user interface is intuitive.

      On a visual object or a group of visual objects, such as icons
or windows, we provide a pair of button-like sensitive areas.  The
safeguarded operation requires a user to click on one of the buttons
and then click on the other.  If the operation is not carried out
according to a predefined sequence, the activating procedure fails.
The combination of the separated mouse operations on different
sensitive areas ensured that the safeguarded operations will not be
activated accidentally.

      The implementation is unique because it provides a user
interface style that is precise for critical operations and still
friendly enough.  It greatly reduces the chances of absent-minded
error operations from a user.
