Abstract

This invention describes a novel means of providing the control of motion to a cartridge type of tape device. The cartridge contains two rotatable hubs containing magnetic recording tapes (not shown). These reels of tape are wound around a bearing surface and a centrally located magnetic head. The hub/clutch connects the motor and tape reel. The motor provides rotary motion to the hub via a hollow shaft. This assembly is known as the pin hole clutch.

Pin Hole Hub/Clutch for a Small Form Factor Tape Drive

      This invention describes a novel means of providing the control
of motion to a cartridge type of tape device.  The cartridge contains
two rotatable hubs containing magnetic recording tapes (not shown).
These reels of tape are wound around a bearing surface and a
centrally located magnetic head.  The hub/clutch connects the motor
and tape reel.  The motor provides rotary motion to the hub via a
hollow shaft.  This assembly is known as the pin hole clutch.

      The pin hole clutch contains the following key components as
shown in Figure 1.  The pin/hole clutch provides a means of
transmitting torque to the hub via a round nose pin into an accurate
hole in the hub.  In other words, the hub has a matching hole.  In
combination, the pin/hole assembly provides the necessary means of
centering, thereby guaranteeing very small velocity variation.
      1.   Upper drive pins - provide rotational driving force to the
hub (not shown).
      2.   Lower drive pin - provides guidances to the 5mm or so
linear motion as well as coupling the rotational motion to the inner
shaft.
      3.   Inner shaft - provides centralized linear motion as well
as the rotary motion.  It is about 3mm in diameter in this particular
application.
      4.   Clutch guide - provides coupling between the outer hollow
shaft and the inner small shaft.  The clamping is accomplished by
