Abstract

This technique makes use of the time stamp for the workstation to start the selection of a unique file DOS file handle. The conventional time stamp is yy/mm/dd/hh/mm/ss, with a numerical character from 0-9 for each one of the positions. In accordance with the invention, the year and month positions are reversed in their order so that the basic order for the characters is now ss/mm/hh/dd.

This text was extracted from an ASCII text file.

Method to Choose a Unique DOS File Name

This technique makes use of the time stamp for the
workstation to start the selection of a unique file DOS file handle.
The conventional time stamp is yy/mm/dd/hh/mm/ss, with a numerical
character from 0-9 for each one of the positions.  In accordance with
the invention, the year and month positions are reversed in their
order so that the basic order for the characters is now ss/mm/hh/dd.

Then in accordance with the invention, the day/day characters
are set to 01.  Then, a search is performed of all of the existing
file handles in the system to see if there are any having the same
ss/mm/hh characters.  The reason for the reversal of the order and
the testing of the second/minute and hour is that they are typically
more sparse values in a population than is the day character.  If no
other ss/mm/ hh character combination is found in the existing
population, then the xx file handle name is chosen to be the
ss/mm/hh/01.

However, if the same ss/mm/hh values are found in the existing
population, then the day/day value of 01 is incremented until a
unique eight-character combination is found, and this is now chosen
as the new file handle.  The file handle will be unique to the
population and it is very likely that all 01-99 possible combinations
of the same values of ss/mm/hh will be found in the existing
population of file names.  The time stamp from the system clock has
the format MMDDHHmm SSYYYY, whe...
