Test Probes with Retainer Ring

       This article describes test probes with a retainer ring
for testing test point grids on circuit boards of less than 20 (16,
12) mil.  The test probes are suitable for simultaneous testing and
are identical for top and bottom contacting.  They may be exchanged
without removing the test adapter.

      The shaft of the test probe is made of spring steel and has a
diameter of 0.5 mm differing from that of the test head.  The test
head is either (laser) welded to the shaft or squeezed or pressed
into it.  Depending upon the respective test point grid, the test
probe ends may be identical and the head dispensed with.

      All test probes are fixed by a displaceable retainer ring which
adjusts automatically in the adapter.  The retainer ring may consist
of a TEFLON* injection molding; an O-ring of rubber, TEFLON, or other
materials; a spring coil; a slotted sleeve of brass, steel, aluminum,
copper, or similar materials, or a TEFLON hose piece.  The retainer
ring must adequately adhere to the pin but permit the latter to move
in response to a higher force.

      The advantages of the novel test probes and the displaceable
retainer ring are:
      1.  The test probes are exchangeable without removing the
adapter.
      2.  The same test probes may be used in the upper and the lower
adapter.
      3.  The retainer ring adjusts automatically to the required
