Diagnostic Diskette Tool

A tool is provided that allows a user to determine the
operability of the media sense function of 3.5-inch diskette drives.

At present 3.5-inch diskettes are available in 1-megabyte,
2-megabyte and 4-megabyte capacities.  A using system must determine
what capacity media is installed prior to using the media.  This
determination is generally made by sensing the state of two media
sense switches located in the diskette drive.  The states of the
media sense switches are determined by the type of media installed,
as indicated in Table 1 and Fig. 1.  Each media type has only one of
four possible combinations of the two media sense locations covered
or uncovered according to the arrangements indicated in Table 1.

This diagnostic diskette tool contains sliding tabs, similar to
write protect tabs, that may be positioned in various combinations so
that the functionality of the media sense circuitry is determined.

It is not intended to actually write or read from this
diskette, although it is possible if the tabs are properly positioned
to indicate the correct capacity of this diskette.

Any diagnostic program can be prepared to read the state of the
media sense lines and display the results.

These disclosed sliding tabs are incorporated into diagnostic
diskettes to be used, e.g., by customers, customer engineers,
manufacturing test personnel and development engineers and
programmers.
