Self Error Logging with Time Stamp in Hard Disk Drive

Disclosed is a new feature for a hard disk drive (HDD) to
make problem analysis easier.  Employing this feature, it is easy to
collect detailed error information even for very intermittent problem
phenomena in HDD.

When a HDD-related problem occurs on a personal computer, it is
sometimes difficult to isolate the real cause of that problem because
a system usually reports only high-level error code and it is not
directly related to HDD-level error code.  Furthermore, the system
may report a hard disk error when the cause of that problem is even
in an adapter card or a system board.

Elements of the present invention are as follows:
o  HDD logs error/related information on a disk surface or in
non-volatile memory when HDD detects an error so as to collect the
error information even after powering off the system.
o  Getting immediate error information related to the problem to
investigate; error should be logged with date and time-stamp showing
when the error occurred.
o  Having a command to set the date and time to HDD; both the system
and HDD support this type of command.  It is easy to send the date
and time to HDD in the power-on reset procedure.
o  Using this command, it is easy to reduce the number of error log
spaces because it can be seen that one to one error log to the
problem needed to be checked.

This mechanism also offers the effective failure analysis
