Abstract

A disk enclosure 1 for a hard file memory constructed of more than one piece (a and b) such that there is a seam between the pieces. Further, the two pieces are joined periodically along the seam by a low electrical impedance connection 2 and a similar connection at the midpoint along the bottom of the enclosure. These connections occur often enough to prevent low frequency electromagnetic interference (EMI) from entering the box. Supplementing these connections is a metallic tape seal 3. The tape seal provides a continuous electrical capacitive connection between the two sides of the seam at high EMI frequencies and also acts as a dust-tight seal for the enclosure 1 (see Fig. 1).

       A disk enclosure 1 for a hard file memory constructed of
more than one piece (a and b) such that there is a seam between the
pieces.  Further, the two pieces are joined periodically along the
seam by a low electrical impedance connection 2 and a similar
connection at the midpoint along the bottom of the enclosure.  These
connections occur often enough to prevent low frequency
electromagnetic interference (EMI) from entering the box.
Supplementing these connections is a metallic tape seal 3.  The tape
seal provides a continuous electrical capacitive connection between
the two sides of the seam at high EMI frequencies and also acts as a
dust-tight seal for the enclosure 1 (see Fig. 1).

      The periodic connection may be achieved by a fastener 4
consisting of a screw 9 which is used to attach the spindle assembly
to the casting 10 and is also a means of locating and attaching the
cover 5 to the disk enclosure 1.  The cover 5 has an open-ended slot
6 that allows the cover 5 to slide over the disk pack and locate the
cover 5.  Next to the open-ended slot 6 is a finger 7 that is bent
around the spindle screw 9 after assembly.  A small-cupped star
washer 8 fits over the head of the spindle screw 9 to match the width
of the slot 6 in the cover 5.  The star washer 8 acts as a
flexible interface between the cover 5 and the spindle screw 9 where
