Abstract

Today's computers manipulate the soft copy texts in many formats. The advancement in various composer programs, editors, and printers have introduced many changes in the contents of a text file. Depending on the editor, printer and or document composer, each text character may inherit one or more special control characters, which are usually prefixed to it.

This text was extracted from an ASCII text file.
This is the abbreviated version, containing approximately 64% of the total text.

Simplification of Control Characters within a Text File

Today's computers manipulate the soft copy texts in many
formats.  The advancement in various composer programs, editors, and
printers have introduced many changes in the contents of a text file.
Depending on the editor, printer and or document composer, each text
character may inherit one or more special control characters, which
are usually prefixed to it.

This would be no problem if each user had access to a driver
which is capable of displaying and or printing the text file, but if
the user does not have the right tool, he or she may not be able
to comprehend the contents of a text file, due to numerous control
characters intermixed with the actual text.  On the other hand some
installations have resorted to duplicating the same ASCII file by
reformatting it for more than one composer program.

Computer industry is working toward an open, fully portable,
and user friendly system.  The stated problem does not meet any of
these requirements.

It is suggested that rather than intermixing the control
characters with the actual text, the control characters should be
kept outside of the context of the text file.

This can be achieved by appending the control characters to the
end of each text file.

The  control character part of the text file can be delimited
by a special set of characters that can be used to signal the
beginning and ending of control char...
